What is "The Holiday Month"?

The Holiday Month is an attempt to celebrate a calendar years worth of holidays during the month of January, 2012.

When the holiday takes place on a specific day (i.e. St. Patrick's Day always takes place on March 17th), then it will be celebrated on January 17th. When a holiday takes place on a rotating day (i.e. Thanksgiving takes place on the fourth Thursday of November), then it will be celebrated on the corresponding day in January.

Concessions had to be made for holidays corresponding with religious calendars . These holidays, such as Easter and Purim, will be celebrated on the dates that they are taking place in 2012. Mardi Gras, the celebration that marks the beginning of the season of Lent, is being celebrated on the Tuesday before Easter, as this would then represent the beginning and end of that religious celebration.

The holidays celebrated during this month are in NO WAY all of the holidays celebrated throughout the year. Every effort was made to create a list that would cover major religious beliefs, as well as fun and interesting holidays that everyone might not celebrate.

Happy Holidays!

Welcome to the Holiday Month!

There is so much negativity going on in today's society. The economy stinks and our money is on fire.  Our education system churns out robotic test takers instead of imaginative thinkers.  Political talk-heads have divided the nation along party lines while leaving our government to crumble. And the Kardashians are still on TV. In short, we have a lot to complain about.

But we also have a lot to be thankful for, and that is what The Holiday Month is all about.

I felt that it was important to kick off the new year in a way that would help me remember that there really is something to celebrate each and every day. While I understand that celebrating a holiday every day is an extreme way to go about this, I do believe that if we treated every day as if it were a holiday, then maybe the problems that we face wouldn't be that bad.  Maybe smiles would come a little easier to our faces, and maybe our capacity for compassion and good humor would grow.

Or, we could all just have another excuse to go to the bar.  And who couldn't use another one of those.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
