What is "The Holiday Month"?

The Holiday Month is an attempt to celebrate a calendar years worth of holidays during the month of January, 2012.

When the holiday takes place on a specific day (i.e. St. Patrick's Day always takes place on March 17th), then it will be celebrated on January 17th. When a holiday takes place on a rotating day (i.e. Thanksgiving takes place on the fourth Thursday of November), then it will be celebrated on the corresponding day in January.

Concessions had to be made for holidays corresponding with religious calendars . These holidays, such as Easter and Purim, will be celebrated on the dates that they are taking place in 2012. Mardi Gras, the celebration that marks the beginning of the season of Lent, is being celebrated on the Tuesday before Easter, as this would then represent the beginning and end of that religious celebration.

The holidays celebrated during this month are in NO WAY all of the holidays celebrated throughout the year. Every effort was made to create a list that would cover major religious beliefs, as well as fun and interesting holidays that everyone might not celebrate.

Happy Holidays!

January 15th - Father's Day

The last day of my three day greeting card holiday extravaganza leads us to Father’s Day.  It is meant to celebrate the influence of father’s on society, celebrate paternal bonds, and increase the sales of power tools and ties all across the country.  It was first celebrated in Fairmont, WV in 1908.  What is it with West Virginia and creating holidays (followers of the blog will know that the state is home to Mother’s Day as well)?  It takes place on the third Sunday in June, which means that this year it will be on June 17th.  Mark your calendars, all you wayward sons and daughters, and make sure you head to Home Depot or Lowes well before then.

Now, since I talked about my own mom on Mother’s Day, I will be talking about my dad on Father’s Day.

William Lloyd Farabee III was born on January 11th, 19 blah blah blah blah (he’s getting up there and I’m not going to call him out on it).  I’ve never heard my grandparents, his parents, call him by his given name.  Instead, they’ve only called him “Butch” (one of the reasons, I think, why he named me “Lars” as opposed to “William Lloyd Farabee IV”).  He has worked for the same company for almost 25 years, which in this economic climate is pretty amazing.  He’s respected by his co-workers and his friends, and loved by his family.

I never quite got the whole "jumping" thing down pat

I used to look just like him, but beer and pizza has made the resemblance not as easy to see from my end.  However, I have many of his mannerisms and I sound a lot like him.  He whistles along with every song on the radio, and I’ve started to catch myself doing the same. As the years have gone by, I see more and more of the man I want to be in the man that he is today.

A father/son stroll...at what appears to be a beer festival...

To celebrate, I gave him a call this morning.  A few days earlier I made sure to stop by the office to see him in person on my drive down south.  A 10 hour drive isn't that bad when family is at the other end.
